Rapid Dialogue and Branching Tutors
نویسنده
چکیده
The technology used as part of the Tools for Rapid Automated Development of Expert Models (TRADEM) project has been featured at a number of conferences and publications throughout its creation and development. As a part of these efforts, it has been integrated with the Generalized Intelligent Framework for Tutoring (GIFT) in two fashions: branching, using the Engine for Management of Adaptive Pedagogy (EMAP), and dialogue-based, using open-source chat technology. This technology is nearly ready to be deployed to the public, enabling this workshop to demonstrate its capability, highlight its use, and allow users to make their own tutors centered about their own content.

Towards our goal of developing computer tutors that can collaborate with students on tasks in simulated environments, we have built a series of four prototype tutors. These tutors integrate two independent but related strands of research: intelligent tutoring systems and task-oriented dialogue systems. While the tutors share a core approach to teaching procedural tasks, each was designed to exp...
متن کاملAnnotation of Tutorial Dialogue Goals for Natural Language Generation
We annotated transcripts of human tutoring dialogue for the purpose of constructing a dialogue-based intelligent tutoring system, CIRCSIM-Tutor. The tutors were professors of physiology who were also expert tutors. The students were 1st year medical students who communicated with the tutors using typed communication from separate rooms. The tutors made use of a rich variety of strategies, some ...
متن کاملHow Do They Do It? Investigating Dialogue Moves within Dialogue Modes in Expert Human Tutoring
Expert human tutors are widely considered to be the gold standard for increasing student learning. While not every student has access to an expert tutor, it is possible to model intelligent tutoring systems after expert tutors. In an effort to achieve this goal, we have analyzed a corpus of 50 hours of one-toone expert human tutoring sessions. This corpus was coded for speech acts (dialogue mov...
متن کاملEvaluating the Effectiveness of Tutorial Dialogue Instruction in an Exploratory Learning Context
In this paper we evaluate the instructional effectiveness of tutorial dialogue agents in an exploratory learning setting. We hypothesize that the creative nature of an exploratory learning environment creates an opportunity for the benefits of tutorial dialogue to be more clearly evidenced than in previously published studies. In a previous study we showed an advantage for tutorial dialogue sup...
متن کاملSpoken Versus Typed Human and Computer Dialogue Tutoring
While human tutors typically interact with students using spoken dialogue, most computer dialogue tutors are text-based. We have conducted two experiments comparing typed and spoken tutoring dialogues, one in a human-human scenario, and another in a human-computer scenario. In both experiments, we compared spoken versus typed tutoring for learning gains and time on task, and also measured the c...
